Every fall, we have the special opportunity to highlight culture, history, and traditions during Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15–October 15). For Spanish teachers, it’s the perfect time to make connections between language and culture while engaging students in fun, interactive learning.
If you’re looking for out-of-the-box ideas to bring Hispanic Heritage Month alive in your classroom, here are some tried-and-true activities students love:
🎲 Two Facts and a Fib
Students learn cultural facts while practicing their listening and critical thinking skills. Share three statements (two true, one false) about Hispanic culture, famous people, or traditions, and have students guess which one is the “fib.”
✂️ Cut & Paste Puzzles
Perfect for hands-on learners! Students match vocabulary, cultural information, or famous figures with images to build a full puzzle. A great way to reinforce knowledge in a tactile way.
🟩 Four Corners Game
Post cultural statements or trivia around the room and have students “vote with their feet” by moving to the correct corner. This kinesthetic activity gets everyone moving and discussing cultural facts.
✏️ Crossword Puzzles
Crosswords make review fun and help reinforce vocabulary and key cultural concepts. They’re low-prep, highly engaging, and easy to differentiate.
🖊️ Whiteboard Practice
Quick and effective, whiteboard review lets students write answers to cultural questions or vocabulary prompts. It’s fast-paced, interactive, and gives you instant feedback.
🌐 WebQuest
Send students on a digital adventure! With a webquest, they explore important Hispanic figures, geography, traditions, and contributions through guided online research.
🔗 Matching Practice
Simple but powerful — matching activities give students a clear way to connect famous people, places, or cultural contributions with their correct descriptions.
💡 Why it works: These activities combine culture and language practice, making Hispanic Heritage Month more than just a unit — it becomes an experience your students will remember.
